4-Day 3-Night Neptune Islands Great White Expedition —
Hosted by Prof. Charlie Huveneers
Day 1 — Welcome Aboard & First Encounters
Meet at Marina Hotel, Port Lincoln at 1:00 PM and board your
expedition vessel. Settle into your cabin, then join a safety briefing and
introductions to Prof. Charlie Huveneers, one of the world’s leading great
white shark researchers. We’ll glide through Thorny Passage to Hopkins Island
for a snorkel with playful Australian sea lions, then continue to the Neptune
Islands Marine Park to anchor and test dive kit. Evening highlights include a
buffet dinner, Prof. Huveneers’ special presentation on the latest great white
research (featuring stunning photography), stargazing under pristine southern
skies, and a relaxed debrief.
Day 2 — Surface Thrills, Ocean Floor Firsts & Science in
Action
Morning briefings precede surface cage sessions — your prime
opportunity for up-close viewing. Once everyone has had surface time, qualified
SCUBA divers prepare for the unique ocean floor cage. Between sessions, explore
the islands by tender to spot New Zealand fur seals, Australian sea lions, and
seabirds ashore. Prof. Huveneers may carry out fieldwork onboard — including
tagging attempts and tissue sampling — offering guests a rare behind-the-scenes
look at active research methods and an explanation of what each procedure tells
us about shark behavior and ecology. Evening features another research talk and
time to rest.
Day 3 — Deep Dives, ID Skills & Research Insights
More extended cage sessions topside and beneath the waves.
By now your shark identification skills will be finely tuned, and Prof.
Huveneers can advise about identification, movement patterns, and conservation
implications. If tagging or sampling opportunities arise, you’ll witness
scientific protocols firsthand and hear real-time interpretation from a leading
expert. Unwind in the evening with island sounds and a chilled glass of South
Australian white.
Day 4 — Final Encounters & A Scientific Farewell
Spend the morning alternating between surface and ocean floor cages — no strict
time limits, ensuring everyone gets fair viewing. Opt for wildlife watching
from the observation deck or relax while dolphins often escort the vessel.
Return to Port Lincoln by 3:00 PM and celebrate on the bow with South
Australian wine and a generous charcuterie board as dolphins commonly accompany
our journey.
Notes
• Itinerary is indicative and may change due to weather or operational needs.
• Ocean floor cage entry requires qualified SCUBA divers.
