About Alessandro
Alessandro De Maddalena has studied extensively the presence of the great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea, a subject on which he’s the foremost expert. In over 15 years of work, he has gathered approx. 600 records of great white sharks from the entire Mediterranean Sea, creating the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank, representing the most complete and comprehensive research program ever performed on the species in that area. This research has led him to study distribution, habitat, movements, size, reproduction, behaviour, diet, attacks on humans, and fishery of the great white shark.
About this trip
This expedition pairs great white shark diving with a full evening lecture series in shark biology, hosted by internationally renowned Italian shark researcher Dott. Alessandro De Maddalena M.Sc. All the briefings and travel to our first dive location are covered on the first day.
Each dive day is dedicated to great white shark diving at either or both of the North and South Neptune Islands groups. Also included (weather permitting) is a tender boat tour to see the Neptune Island colony of long-nosed fur seal, and potential for a walking tour on the Neptune Islands, a treat exclusive to Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions.
One or 2 sessions with the most photogenic Australian sea lions will also be included en route to Neptune Islands and/or on the way back to Port Lincoln. At night, alongside great local food and drinks and beautiful sunsets, Alessandro brings his shark biology course to life with fascinating presentations on shark research, behaviour, biology, ecology and ethology, plus lots of time to relax onboard under the stars.
This trip runs on a similar itinerary as our standard expeditions, with the added bonus of Dott. Alessandro De Maddalena.
Please note: Itinerary is indicative only (subject to weather and any other circumstances that may affect the scheduling of events).
